welcome back to the iamiam blog
jumping in here with a quick john 3:8 vibe to say i’m GASSED to be starting iamiam.global again, a platform dedicated to exploring faith, art and culture, with a particular emphasis on abrahamic religions such as judaism, christianity, islam and much more.
a quick comparison of this verse in new international version (niv), versus di Jamiekan nyuu testiment (jnt):
”the wind blows wherever it pleases. you hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. so it is with everyone born of the spirit.” john 3:8 (niv)
”briiz bluo go wich paat it waahn fi go. yu onggl ier di soun we it mek, bot yu kyaahn si a we it de kom fram an yu kyaahn si wich paat it de go. nou, a siem so it go wid evribadi we di spirit mek baan.” jaan 3:8
as a native multicultural london english/black british english speaker, the jamaican creole version resonates far more to me than the new international version, despite standard english being my first language.
my question or curiousity to leave with you today is this. how can you spread the good news to anyone if you haven’t even spent enough time listening to them to see which translation would make the most sense to them? someone could assume standard english would be the best translation for me, but they would be wrong?
i suspect we are going to need many more bible translations, including a black british english version or a multicultural english version (walahi!)
lots of love, til next time
