“autobiographical example is not a personal story that folds onto itself; it’s not about navel gazing, it’s really about trying to look at historical and social process and one’s own formation as a window onto social and historical processes, as an example of them.”
about
cecile emeke is a jamaican-english filmmaker, writer, and artist from london, with a body of work spanning broadcast television, independent film, and visual art. her work often explores themes of time, cosmology, and cultural production, particularly through the lens of the black diasporic experience in liminal spaces and intimate settings, with a special focus on black british, caribbean, and black diasporic culture.
cecile is widely recognized for her versatility and dexterity, seamlessly exploring her interests across a range of mediums and genres, from comedy to documentary and experimental cinema to narrative drama.
her creative journey began in 2014 with her debut narrative comedy short film ackee & saltfish and the online documentary series strolling. this success led to her directing hbo's insecure, idris elba's in the long run, and the tate modern commission the ancestors came, a piece on the life and work of artist faith ringgold.
cecile is currently developing several projects, including her debut narrative feature film no telephone to heaven, a black diasporic odyssey that merges speculative fiction with contemporary magical realism.
her continued, diverse practice underscores her commitment to multiplicity in an industry that often enforces singularity and conformity, particularly for black women.
with over a decade of industry experience, having witnessed systemic malpractice in her own career and that of her peers, cecile is committed to fostering sustainable, healthy, and equitable work environments for artists and cultural workers. she is the founder of 274°, a creative agency that offers an integrative, holistic approach to cultural production, providing training and support to institutions, organizations, and individuals across the cultural sector.
a passionate advocate for black art and artists, cecile also serves as a trustee for the bernie grant arts centre in tottenham, a combined arts venue dedicated to promoting black art and artists both locally and globally.
